MUSIC FORWARD CELEBRATES NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE FIRST-EVER APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM IN MUSIC AND LIVE ENTERTAINMENT RECOGNIZED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

NOVEMBER 18, 2024 – LOS ANGELES, CA – Music Forward, a national non-profit organization and Live Nation’s charity arm, proudly recognizes National Apprenticeship Week by celebrating its federally recognized apprenticeship program – the first of its kind nationally that focuses specifically on music and live entertainment. Apprenticeships bolster Music Forward’s mission to pave the way for the next generation of industry talent by helping young leaders transition from music enthusiasts into seasoned professionals via competitive training, professional development, on-the-job training, and mentorship and coaching. This innovative program is revolutionizing how young people from underrepresented communities gain the skills, experience and mentorship they need to thrive in one of the most dynamic industries in the world.

The journey to this first-ever registered apprenticeship in music and live entertainment began pre-pandemic via Music Forward harnessing its connections at the California Department of Education, community-based organizations, arts media and entertainment industry leaders BRIC Foundation (BRIC), Entertainment Equity Alliance (EEA) and Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) coming together to assess the role of workforce stakeholders in supporting a thriving and diverse arts and entertainment industry. This process led to the realization that registered apprenticeships are a vital part of preparing the next generation of industry professionals.

“This historic apprenticeship program bridges training, education, and high-skill, high-wage jobs in music and live entertainment, addressing challenges around building an inclusive industry and cultivating its long-term sustainability,” explains Music Forward Foundation Executive Director Nurit Smith. “With support from our employer partners, we are providing paid, hands-on experience to kick-start careers and drive economic mobility. This initiative is a critical addition to our work, our youth, and the industry we serve.”

These career paths are being built in partnership with high schools in the Centinela Valley Union High, Compton Unified and Los Angeles Unified school districts along with the California Department of Education’s Arts, Media, and Entertainment (AME) and Career Technical Education (CTE) industry sector schools plus Compton College – who are all teaching essential workplace skills, training students on creative processes and industry-standard technology and emulating professional environments to create authentic learning experiences for students. From San Francisco to San Diego, Music Forward works to reach young professionals, giving them the tools they need to launch successful careers in the music and live entertainment industries. Since its launch, Music Forward has received over 200 applicants interested in apprenticeships. Of those applicants, 92% are BIPOC and 61% female – ensuring the program supports underrepresented voices.

Music Forward’s competency-based apprenticeship program’s rigorous structure requires at least 1,080 on-the-job paid training hours coupled with mentorship and supplemental learning. It provides a vast breadth of apprenticeship opportunities in different pathways including Marketing, Special Events, Music Supervision and Talent booking as well as technicians in Lighting, Audio and Video (A/V) and production roles such as Grip/Rigger, Stagehand and Audio Engineering. Music Forward has partnered with entertainment industry heavyweights Live Nation, Wasserman, Bigger Hammer, Show Imaging, BRIC, Bulldog Event Group and others to provide a robust selection of apprenticeship placements where young emerging professionals receive training and experience to ensure they are poised for success. As the apprenticeship program grows, Music Forward seeks to bring in additional industry employer partners to continue expanding opportunities and build a bigger future together for young talent.

Music Forward’s current apprenticeship program participants are Gabriel Escalante & Kaije Rood at Show Imaging as Warehouse Techs, Chloe Colligan and Troy White at Wasserman in Talent Coordination and Marketing respectively, Emily San Vicente at BRIC Foundation in Marketing and Breanna Flores at Music Forward in Special Events.

“My experience has been incredible,” raves Wasserman apprentice Troy White. “My team has taught me tour marketing from the ground up, and my main takeaway is that being detail-oriented is the key to success in the agency space, no matter what department you are in, along with ambition!”

Wasserman apprentice Chloe Colligan enthuses, “The experience has been really amazing, and I am so grateful for this opportunity! I think the main takeaway for me is seeing how the music industry operates first-hand, and it honestly surpassed my expectations.”

Ensuring a strong foundation and necessary resources, Music Forward’s apprenticeship program has received remarkable government support including being the recipient of a $500,000 California Opportunity Youth Apprenticeship (COYA) grants, one of the only dedicated to careers in the creative economy.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s dedication to Music Forward’s apprenticeship program is exemplified by his statement: “California is committed to helping disadvantaged youth prepare for high-quality careers. Through our nation-leading career education efforts, we’re boosting apprenticeships throughout the state and across industries to help young people launch into the right career for them.”

Along with the COYA grant, Music Forward has secured nearly $1M in multi-year support for this initiative from the Irvine Foundation, the South Bay Workforce Investment Board, California Workforce Development Board and High Road Training Partnerships. These funds will allow for youth and employer incentives, education stipends, mentoring and training for careers in the creative economy.

National Apprenticeship Week: November 17-23, 2024, is a nationwide celebration where employers, industry representatives, labor organizations, community-based organizations, workforce partners, educational institutions, and Federal, State, and local government agencies host events to showcase the successes and value of Registered Apprenticeship for strengthening our economy by developing a highly skilled workforce to meet industry needs, creating pathways for career seekers to catapult into good jobs, and advancing racial and gender equity. National Apprenticeship Week gives registered apprenticeship sponsors the opportunity to showcase their programs, facilities, and apprentices in their community. To learn more about Music Forward Foundation’s apprenticeship program, visit HERE.

(LOS ANGELES – July 25, 2024) — Live Nation, the world’s leading live entertainment company, in partnership with the national nonprofit Music Forward Foundation, today announced the recipients of its 2024 scholarship awards. Five remarkable college students pursuing live entertainment and music industry careers have been awarded a total of $50,000 in scholarships.

This year’s extraordinary group of talented scholarship recipients were selected based on academic performance, leadership skills, and an enthusiastic commitment to the live entertainment industry. Recipients of this year’s awards include Adina Aaron, Cristian Meza, Jasmine Gordon, Michael Brown, and Raagavi Venkatesh

“At Music Forward, we help pave the way for youth pursuing careers in the music and live entertainment industry,” said Music Forward Foundation Executive Director, Nurit Smith. “With the support of our generous partners, we are once again able to award impactful scholarships to deserving young people, providing a plethora of opportunities as they work to achieve their goals and dreams.”

Adina Aaron, a 20-year-old rising junior and Business Administration major at the University of Southern California, is the recipient of the $10,000 Live Nation Scholarship. This scholarship supports students pursuing careers in the five core areas of Live Nation’s business: concert promotion, venue operation, sponsorship, ticketing, and artist management.

Aaron recently performed solo for the first time and released two singles this year while pursuing her degree. She plans to immerse herself in the day-to-day operations of the music industry and explore careers such as Music Supervisor, Creative Director, and A&R Manager, while developing herself as an artist.

“Winning [the Live Nation Scholarship is] a huge help in supporting my education and removing the financial obstacles that stand in the way of my dreams,” said Aaron. “With rising tuition and living costs, this scholarship [gives] me the relief I need to focus on my studies and take advantage of opportunities to advance my career. It [will] also help me avoid piling up student loan debt, allowing me to pursue my passions without the worry of financial burdens.”

Cristian Meza, a 24-year-old rising senior and Entertainment Technology major at New York City College of Technology, is the recipient of the $10,000 Governors Ball Scholarship. This scholarship supports students living in the five boroughs of New York City, pursuing a degree in live entertainment, with a focus in music.

Meza is tremendously proud to be pursuing his college degree. Coming from an immigrant family, he will be the first in his family to achieve this feat. Meza is not afraid to dream big and strives to become an audio engineer and tour throughout the country. Eventually he hopes to open his own music venue.

“This scholarship means so much to me,” says Meza. “When I first started this journey, I always had people telling me I couldn’t achieve my dreams, and receiving this scholarship shows me that there are people out there that do believe in me, and my dreams are reachable. I want to thank all the people who didn’t believe in me because that just helped me want it even more.”

Cristian Meza receives the 2024 Governors Ball Scholarship check from Music Forward Foundation Executive Director, Nurit Smith, at the Governors Ball Festival Grounds on Friday, June 7.

Jasmine Gordon, a 21-year-old rising senior and Comparative Women’s Studies major at Spelman College, is the recipient of the $10,000 Tiffany Green Operator Scholarship. This scholarship was established by Live Nation to support women pursuing careers in live entertainment.

Gordon is a Dean’s List recipient who currently serves as President of the Spelman College Women in Hip-Hop Collective, fostering connections between students and industry leaders while celebrating the achievements of women in music. This accomplished young woman also had the honor of presenting at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards earlier this year. Gordon hopes to work in branding and marketing within urban music and live entertainment. She aspires to help influence and shape the narratives of artists, eventually establishing a mentorship program.

“Receiving this scholarship holds profound significance for me, serving as a crucial factor in remaining enrolled at my institution,” says Gordon. “This scholarship, established in memory of one of Live Nation’s first female concert production specialists, embodies the spirit of pioneering women in live entertainment, and being a recipient motivates me to strive for excellence and to serve as a role model for other young women aspiring to make their mark in the industry.”

Michael Brown, a 19-year-old rising sophomore of Audio Production major at Howard University is the recipient of the $10,000 David E. Ballard Scholarship. This scholarship supports youth who have experienced homelessness and/or been part of the foster care system and are pursuing a career in live entertainment.

Brown was selected to perform at his first festival, From the Go Fest, this month. He became even more motivated to pursue his dreams when he received encouraging words from the VP of Roc Nation. Brown hopes to make a living as an audio engineer while honing his craft as a recording and performing musician.

“I’d like to send my overwhelming gratitude to Music Forward for investing in all my dreams and holding them valuable,” says Brown. “When I initially started my college journey, knowing it would be a risk due to my lack of funding, I had no idea how my circumstances would turn out. Not only am I a first-generation college student, but I also come from a low-income household, and I’ve battled with homelessness in the past, so me deciding to bet on myself wasn’t an easy choice.”

Raagavi Venkatesh, a 20-year-old rising senior and Music Industry major at Drexel University, is the recipient of the $10,000 Steven J. Finkel Service Excellence Scholarship. Live Nation established this scholarship to award students who are passionate about improving the live music experience for fans and artists.

Venkatesh has made a significant community impact through Drexel University’s Flux, a live music organization which provides the student body with a variety of unique musical experiences by organizing and presenting concerts and events in various locations throughout campus, while being completely student-run. Venkatesh has found being part of this impactful organization incredibly rewarding and is proud to be taking on the role of President next year. She hopes to continue her work post-graduation by enhancing the live music experience for both fans and artists through creativity and innovation.

“Receiving the Steven J. Finkel Service Excellence Scholarship has been an incredibly meaningful moment in my life,” says Venkatesh. “Not only is it the financial support, but it’s also a validation of my passion for service, and my commitment to academic and professional excellence. Knowing that my efforts have been recognized in this way fills me with so much gratitude and inspires me to continue making a difference in my community. This scholarship is such an amazing opportunity, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”

The Music Forward Foundation, a nonprofit that’s part of the House of Blues and Live Nation Entertainment family, has announced two major fundraisers in early October in celebration of the organization’s 30th anniversary. The festivities include the Music Forward Brunch at the Hollywood Bowl and the foundation’s inaugural Celebrity Golf Tournament at the El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, California.

The brunch, taking place on Oct. 1, honors music industry visionaries with a buffet curated by James Beard Award-winning chef Suzanne Goin and restaurateur Caroline Styne. Music Forward alum will perform throughout the brunch.

On Oct. 2, the Celebrity Golf Classic will take place at the El Caballero Country Club, and players can meet youth from the foundation and watch them perform. Following the tournament, attendees will enjoy dinner, cocktails and live performances.

“I really wanted to find awareness-building events that we could galvanize the industry and our community around,” Music Forward Executive Director Nurit Smith tells Pollstar of the upcoming 30th-anniversary celebrations. “We have our brunch, and this is a feel-good event where we not only are recognizing Music Forward’s 30th anniversary, but this year and every year from now on, we are going to be highlighting and recognizing leaders, artists in live entertainment, and music that goes beyond this stage, beyond the music, and impacts our communities in a positive way. Our world, our earth, our industry. We get to make a little bit extra noise because it’s our 30th, but we have got some amazing folks being honored as well.”

Smith, who worked with the Screen Actors Guild Foundation prior to joining Music Forward in 2018, particularly looks forward to the foundation’s upcoming Celebrity Golf Tournament. She first launched a golf tournament with the Screen Actors Guild, and says golf is “an amazing way to fundraise.”

“This is a true fundraiser, but we’re going to have celebrity guests and each foursome golf team will have a fifth player, which will be a celebrity coming in and adding a little flavor to their team and excitement for the day,” Smith says. “We have a shotgun start at 11 o’clock, and cocktails, dinner and awards are at 5 p.m., so that will be a beautiful day on the green out here in Los Angeles.”

House of Blues founder Isaac Tigrett started the Music Forward Foundation in 1993 alongside business partner and “Blues Brother” Dan Aykroyd, when it was then called the International House of Blues Foundation. The foundation aims to support young people pursuing entertainment careers, primarily focusing on those aged 13-24. Smith works alongside Music Forward Foundation Board President Patti-Anne Tarlton for the foundation.

“Music Forward came from such an iconic brand with the House of Blues,” Smith says. “It resonated with me in that space. The mission statement, the intention around repositioning the organization 20 years in and repositioning it into this critical architect of creative workforce development into music and live entertainment was, for me, one of the only organizations out there. And personally really resonated with me, with my arts, entertainment, philanthropy and education background. It all came together in a beautiful amalgamation in 2018 when I joined the team during our 25th anniversary year.”

Over the years, Music Forward has helped launch several illustrious careers, with alumni including Phoebe Bridgers and recent Pollstar cover U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost, whose high school band, The Charter, performed at their local House of Blues.

“You audition, they pick five local artists around different House of Blues around the country,” Frost told Pollstar. “You do five sessions where you learn how to market your music and then they let you do a show and you each get like 20 to 25 minutes on stage. They give you a bunch of free tickets for your friends and you move tickets. We headlined our show and it was insane we had like a thousand people there.”

Music Forward Foundation partners with companies including BMG, Primary Wave and Concord to provide those in the program with paid internship opportunities, apprenticeships and more. Aspiring musicians and professionals are paired up with mentors and taught how to network and access paid performances.

“Live Nation has backed Music Forward since day one, and we congratulate them on 30 years of helping youth discover and build careers in live music,” Michael Rapino, President and CEO of Live Nation Entertainment, said in a statement. “The industry is growing and diversifying faster than ever, which means there are even more opportunities to support the next generation and we look forward to continuing our work together.”

Music Forward alum LaTisha Stephens discovered Music Forward while in her last two years of college. She joined one of the workshop programs offered by the foundation, where she learned how to build out her resume so that she could land her first internship.

“The workshop was good,” Stephens says. “It was honestly the only thing that was resourceful for what was going on and what I should work on myself and look into. They had public speakers, as well. It was good to hear information from people who were already in the industry, in the field that they wanted to be in. Then, for my internship, it was the first internship I ever had.”

Stephens also believes in paying her experience within the program forward, and she’s joined panels to provide current students with the advice she herself learned through her experience.

Martie Faye, a Filipina singer and another Music Forward alum, discovered the foundation during the pandemic.

“I was looking for some virtual gigs to do while we were on lockdown,” she tells Pollstar. “And I came across their Open Mic Fridays, so I applied. Then, on the same webpage, they also had all the programs that they were running at the time. They had an Apple Play Studios program, so I decided to apply to that as well and I was able to do both… I thought it was really enriching, it was great to meet other musicians in L.A. and I found the environment to be really supportive. Even though we all had our own individual projects, everyone was hyping each other up.”

In addition to celebrating Music Forward’s 30th anniversary, Smith is excited to bring in-person events back to the foundation. This year marked the first time their All Access Festival returned to live spaces, serendipitously lining up with their milestone year. The program serves as a job fair for college students, allowing them to get their foot in the door. The event launched in 2018 to help young folks explore a variety of career paths within the music industry. The career fair also aims to help those attending to find job and internship placements by pairing them up one-on-one with HR representatives.

“As we’re coming back, we’re realizing that our communities shifted slightly,” Smith says. “Not only did our community shift to more beacon cities like New York and Nashville, but we’re still seeing a lot of energy around some of our historic cities like Chicago, New Orleans and across Texas, where we had those House of Blues anchor spaces. The virtual space gave us a breadth of reach we couldn’t have envisioned. The speed with which we were able to globally reach young people allowed our recent virtual All Access Fest a few weeks ago to have young people from over 30 countries show up.”

More than one million young people have participated in Music Forward over the past three decades and the organization has helped to provide more than $42 million in scholarships, workforce opportunities, relief funds and more.

“We bring interns into our organization regularly, but we also place interns all over the country,” Smith says. “To see them shine and excel and be curious and succeed, for me, those are the points that continue to fuel me in this mission. We’re in this for the long run. When you see young people succeeding, securing those full-time jobs after meeting them when they were 15 years old and in the foster care system, now touring the world as a crew member. That’s what inspires me.”

It gives me a sense of responsibility to use my education to make a positive impact in my community and beyond. I will make sure to use this opportunity to its fullest and make the most out of it.”

Frerichs is a Dean’s List recipient whose passion for live music has driven her to gain experience in multiple different sectors including hospitality, marketing, and event coordination. Frerichs is determined to explore all sectors of the industry so she can be versatile and help support venues wherever they may need.

“Receiving the Affinity Plus Scholarship means more to me than I can truly give justice to with my words alone.” Frerichs continued, “Finding out I was the 2023 recipient of this scholarship showed me that the hard work and sacrifices I have made to start building credibility and a name for myself in the music industry are not happening without appreciation and notice from those around me. I truly would be nowhere without the financial support and opportunities like this that have been graciously gifted to me.”

Scholarship selections were made by an influential panel of executives and thought leaders across entertainment, civic, and corporate sectors. Reviewers included committed professionals from companies and organizations across the country including Live Nation, Ticketmaster, Concord, BMG, and Fundamental Music.

Northwell Health, New York’s largest healthcare provider, has joined forces with Jones Beach Theater and the Music Forward Foundation, a national nonprofit organization, to provide students from underserved communities with a series of music industry career-readiness programs, including venue tours and paid internships. The initiative seeks to engage Long Island youth in exploring career paths in the music industry and equip them with the necessary skills and resources to succeed in their chosen field.

Music Forward @ Jones Beach Theater, a community partnership with Northwell Health, engages high schools and community partners across Long Island to provide once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to inspire personal and professional development and to prepare the next generation of music and live entertainment industry leaders.

The program offers students interested in live music careers exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the iconic Jones Beach Theater through venue tours, educational workshops, and paid internships.

Behind-the-scenes experiences at the iconic 15,000-seat amphitheater will begin in June. They will highlight a variety of careers that make live music possible as students consider career pathways within the industry.

“At Northwell, we’re partnering with organizations across Long Island to provide summer employment opportunities that will expand access for local students and empower them to pursue their goals and advance their careers,” said Maxine Carrington, Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer for Northwell Health.  “We’re very excited to work alongside Music Forward on this program to help students gain knowledge and build the necessary skills to thrive in the industry.”

Twelve graduating high school seniors will be selected for the program’s inaugural seven-week paid internship, taking place in July and August. Each week of the internship program will include hands-on training and job shadowing, mentorship from industry professionals, and workshops focused on career readiness. In addition, the program will highlight various careers associated with producing live music events, such as talent acquisition, venue operations, live production, marketing, ticketing, and more.

“This is an incredible opportunity to positively impact the youth we are working with from underserved communities.  They get a chance to work with music industry mentors that can provide them with insight on the profession,” said Debbie Salas-Lopez, Senior Vice President of Community & Population Health.

“The crew at Jones Beach is grateful to Northwell and Music Forward for collaborating with us to create this program,” said Adam Citron, General Manager of Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater. “The amphitheater is an important part of the community and a great place to start a career. Our entire crew looks forward to helping the students get their start in the music industry.”

Through this partnership, Northwell Health and Music Forward will help remove barriers and increase access and opportunity for BIPOC youth, young women, and under-represented communities within the music and live entertainment industry. This initiative aligns with Music Forward’s goal of contributing to a more equitable industry and society.

“We’re honored to join with Northwell to introduce creative workforce programs and activate new, exciting opportunities for Long Island youth,” said Nurit Smith, executive director, Music Forward Foundation. “We look forward to providing these students with the knowledge, resources, and access they need to lead music and live entertainment into the future.”
